Detroit adds bike lanes on Michigan Ave in Corktown
To contact us Click HERE
Peddling through Corktown the other day, I was pleasantly surprised to see that one recently announced plan in Detroit was actually finding its way beyond the drawing board.
The addition of designated bike lanes to certain streets downtown – a plan announced sometime last year – is already becoming a reality, led by lanes on both sides of Michigan Avenue on the western edge of Corktown. (I was told that bike lanes have been added on West Fort Street too, but haven't made my way over there yet.)
As of last week, the Corktown stretch began near Slow's BBQ and went west, but I'm assuming the plan is to extend the lanes past the old Tiger Stadium site and Nemo's, over the Lodge, and eventually onto the currently-being-paved stretch of Michigan Avenue that leads to the heart of the downtown at Campus Martius. Time will tell.
As for the existing lanes, I only rode for a few blocks, but it was pretty cool having a designated lane on which to ride. Granted, Michigan Avenue in Corktown doesn't carry a particularly heavy load of automobile traffic, but the bike lane did provide a sense of safety.
I don't remember which roads downtown were included in the original plan, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for newly added lanes. In the meantime, we applaud the fact that another plan in Detroit panned out to become more than just a plan.

Rule No. 1 in attracting customers: make sure they know you're there.
Tommy's Detroit Bar & Grill, tucked in a low-traffic corner of downtown Detroit that sees little action when the Red Wings aren't in-season, is turning to the basics as it tries to gain traction in the space long occupied by Mac's on Third.
Leading the changes are the additions of a black and orange awning and building signage, both visible to Fort Street travelers who happen to glance toward the Joe down Third Street.
So far, it's working.
It's fair to question whether those changes alone will be enough to give Tommy's a better fate than Mac's, which is why the current owner isn't relying solely on an external facelift to keep the place afloat. For example, in an attempt to warm up to the student crowd from neighboring WCCCU, Tommy's will soon tweak its backroom to feature lounge-style seating, coffee tables and WiFi service. They're good folks at Tommy's; here's hoping they survive the relative quiet of summer to enjoy the swarms of customers that come almost automatically with 40-plus Wings home games.

Dining in the D: Shepherd's Pie at the Grand Trunk Pub

The Grand Trunk Pub might be more known for its huge selection of brews, but there's one menu item you've got to try the next time you're down on Woodward at lunch time. We never pass up the chance to indulge in a bowl of the Trunk's Shepherd's Pie, a heaping helping of mashed potatoes, corn and seasoned beef topped with a thin layer of cheese. It's good eatin'.

Hockey in the 'Hood: Red Wings set to take ice at Clark Park
To contact us Click HERE

First came those annual NHL games on New Year's Day. Then came the Big Chill at the Big House. The outdoor hockey craze continues its roll this weekend when the Red Wings take to the outdoor rink at Clark Park for a one-hour, open-to-the-public practice.
Crews were hard at work Thursday morning setting up bleachers. They tell me a temporary press box will be constructed on the opposite side of the rink. In all, there will be enough seating to accommodate about 1,500 to 2,000 people, which means if you want to get a good look at Pavel and the boys, you'd better get down there early. Like...yesterday.
The event is being held to benefit various Detroit-area charities. Admission is free, but upon entry fans will be asked to give canned goods (to benefit Gleaners Food Bank of Southwest Michigan), gently used hockey equipment (to benefit Clark Park and the Detroit Hockey Association) or a $2 donation (to benefit the Clark Park Coalition). The gates will open early, hours ahead of the Wings' scheduled practice time of 11 a.m. to noon.
The rink at Clark Park, incidentally, is open all winter, offering open skating and drop-in hockey daily. On March 3, the park will be hopping again during the 20th anniversary Clark Park Winter Carnival. You can get all the details at www.clarkparkdetroit.com.
(Thanks to avid Times reader Squish for feeding us the tip about the Wings practice.)

Comerica Park's Cobb Statue Honors a Legend

Sure, Verlander's arm and a couple of choice hits from Dirks had something to do with it. But no doubt a little DT Love went a long way in helping the Tigers beat the Mariners last night. With that, we continue the magic...
Funny that old pal Karl Z should happen to hop aboard the Times train earlier today. Even funnier that we're unintentionally pilfering his Facebook thread that raised an interesting question about those statues out in the Comerica Park leftfield concourse. For it was already our plan to feature one of those statues with today's update, mostly to show off our miraculous photography skills. (Note to novice photographers: When in doubt, position your subject in front of the sun. It looks really cool, provided you don't flinch an inch in either direction, in which case you might go blind.)
Tigers greats who are honored with a statue at Comerica Park include Horton, Kaline, Gehringer, Newhouser and Greenberg. And, as pictured above, Ty Cobb, whose statue relives Cobb's sportsman-like way of driving sharpened, metal cleats into a shortstop's shins. The six together form an impressive collection of talent, and no doubt fans have already spent hours at the Elwood chatting about who should be next. Karl Z. posed that question to Facebook users, who had some interesting responses. Lolich? The Bird? Whitaker and Tram, perhaps?
Some of the younger fans might even be tempted to prematurely anoint Smyly, who's riding a five-game tear that no doubt will continue this evening. The Tigers' surge is just beginning. To help keep it rolling, forward a link to this story to a friend.

Problem-gambling safeguards may target up to 6,000 S'poreansUpdated Jul 07, 2012
SINGAPORE - The government said proposed measures, like setting casino visit limits, to protect the financially vulnerable from problem gambling may target some 4,000 to 6,000 Singaporeans.
And these may include the better-off who are at risk of gambling addiction.
The new measures are slated to kick in by June 2013.
Authorities will work with casino operators to identify those at risk of problem gambling.
These individuals will then be assessed to see if their visits to casinos should be limited.

Recovery Center Now Offers Treatment For Gambling
Justin Stock
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The Lexington Center for Recovery, a nonprofit organization, has received $88,000 from Westchester County to begin a treatment program for people with gambling addictions, said Rod Correa, a substance-abuse and gambling counselor at the center.
“Gambling addicts suffer the same consequences as alcoholics and drug users,” said Correa in an email. “Their gambling devastates marriages, families, jeopardizes jobs ...” In addition, he said, compulsive gamblers have the highest suicide rate among addicts, including alcoholics and drug users.

The new program is “available for all cultures and socioeconomic status, from adolescents to senior citizens,” Correa said. “Besides Gamblers Anonymous, problem gamblers are not aware that treatment is available, and now, right here in New Rochelle. We make the treatment affordable; after all, a problem gambler might not have much money.”
Treatment is also available for spouses and family affected by this disease, he said.
Correa further explains the new program:
Q: Why is the program around?
A: Pathological gambling is a disorder of the brain. One of its characteristics is a desire or temptation to perform some behavior, despite its devastating consequence. Pathological gamblers cannot control the impulse to gamble even if they want to. As a result, marriages have failed and families have been destroyed. Homes, jobs and relationships have been lost. In its final stages, all that is left are immense debts, which cannot be paid back. Of all individuals with addictive disorders, pathological gamblers have the highest rate of suicide.

Understanding the need for treatment for problem gambling, New York State has begun to fund treatment initiatives. Presently, Lexington Center for Recovery is the only facility in Westchester County offering a compulsive-gambling treatment program.
Q: What is the program about?
A: Lexington offers individual treatment for the gambler, with a strong family component. We address cravings, triggers, gambling history with the client. We help the problem gambler recognize compulsive behaviors and their consequences. We assist individuals to break down their denial and address anger and resentments among family members. Together, the client and counselor develop an individualized treatment plan, which delineates the goals to be achieved during treatment.
Q: How does it help problem gamblers?
A: This treatment program will help the gambler heal the wounds inflicted by gambling and will work toward bringing families back together. Gamblers will learn to recognize their cravings and how to address them in order to prevent relapses. All this is done with compassion and understanding; becoming a pathological gambler is not a choice.
Q: How many participants are in the program?
A: This program was launched in May 2012. Right now, what we are doing is raising public awareness that this program exists and, with the help of the media, like The Daily Voice, we hope to accomplish this. There is a lack of awareness that there is now available treatment for people with a gambling problem in Westchester County. We have been getting responses due to our outreach and have begun treating clients with gambling problems.
Q: How has it helped them?
A: Treatment is a process that can’t be finalized right away. The help begins with the gambler admitting to his or her gambling problem, asking for help and coming to the Lexington Center for Recovery for treatment.
Q: What is the program’s success rate?
A: It is very difficult to measure success in the addiction field, as recovery is a lifelong process. However, throughout its 30-year history, Lexington Center for Recovery has treated more than 40,000 substance-abusing clients through a holistic approach, with the recognition that successful recovery comes within a loving circle of support. With the same compassion, understanding and professionalism that we have always subscribed to, we will work to assist gambling-addicted individuals achieve positive outcomes for themselves and their families.

Singapore: Tougher Protections

...stricter requirements on premium players seeking to borrow money for gambling and higher penalties for illegal junket activity at the casinos...
...impose limits on the number of times "financially vulnerable" locals can visit the casinos and give new powers to statutory bodies for policing casino operations and managing gambling addiction...
Critics had opposed the casinos, fearing a rise in social problems such as organized crime and gambling addiction. To contain the impact, the government imposed casino-entry levies, banned advertising that targeted locals and rolled out programs to discourage heavy gambling.
In June, the government said it was widening a casino-entry ban for citizens who are bankrupt or reliant on government aid, with some 43,000 locals to be barred by August 1.
--Singapore proposes stricter rules and enforcement on casino operations, local gamblers
--Proposals include stiffer fines for violations by casino operators, tougher casino-entry controls for locals
--The government will seek public feedback; proposals to be debated in parliament at the end of the year
By Chun Han Wong
SINGAPORE--The Singapore government Friday proposed stricter rules and enforcement for casino operations and local gamblers, as part of efforts to improve its regulatory regime and contain gaming-related social ills.
The wide-ranging proposals--which include stiffer disciplinary penalties for casino operators and tougher casino- gambling restrictions for locals--came just weeks after authorities in Singapore stepped up measures to tackle gambling addiction by barring more "financially vulnerable" people from Singapore's two casinos.
Under the plans, authorities may raise the maximum fine on casino operators for disciplinary breaches to 10% of their gross gaming revenue, instead of the current cap of one million Singapore dollars(US$788,500), according to a document detailing the proposals seen by Dow Jones Newswires.
Analysts have estimated the island state's two casinos--Las Vegas Sands Corp.'s (LVS) Marina Bay Sands and Genting Singapore PLC's (G13.SG) Resorts World Sentosa--each generated roughly $3 billion in gross gaming revenue last year.
Other proposed revisions to the six-year-old Casino Control Act include stricter requirements on premium players seeking to borrow money for gambling and higher penalties for illegal junket activity at the casinos, the document showed.
Junket operators are middlemen who bring high-spending gamblers to the casinos, issue them credit and collect on debts in exchange for commissions. Singapore regulators have licensed just two small junkets so far.
Authorities may also impose limits on the number of times "financially vulnerable" locals can visit the casinos and give new powers to statutory bodies for policing casino operations and managing gambling addiction, according to the document.
In a statement Friday, the government said the proposed legislative changes would "ensure that the casino regulatory regime continues to keep pace with developments in the industry and international best practices."
Authorities will seek public feedback on the proposals Monday in a consultation process scheduled to end August 6, according to the statement. The proposed amendments will be discussed in parliament at the end of the year.
Other proposals include tougher definitions of casino-related crimes, and streamlining administrative and taxation processes regarding the casinos, the document showed.
Authorities, however, don't plan to adjust casino-entry levies for now, according to the document. The government currently taxes locals who enter the casinos S$100 a day and S$2,000 a year.
Singapore dropped a longstanding ban on casino gambling in 2005, paving the way for its first casinos to open in early 2010 as the island state sought to spice up its reputation as a travel destination and reap more tourism dollars.

Stop the Casino 101 Coalition The Voice of the People
| Feds Ignore State Court Action, Approve Graton Rancheria Gambling Compact Federal government "meddling" in state legal issue Stop the Casino 101 Coalition (STC101) has learned from the Bureau of Indian Affairs Gaming Office (202-219-4066) that the Graton Rancheria gambling compact will be signed today by Indian Affairs Assistant Secretary Donald Laverdure. "We are very disappointed with this news," said Pastor Chip Worthington, founder of STC101. "Washington has once again ignored the will of the people in this matter. They are meddling in a state legal issue" "A lawsuit is currently in state court challenging the very legality of the compact, which is governed by state law, not federal law," he said. On May 21, 2012, Stop the Casino 101 Coalition and local residents filed a lawsuit in state court challenging the legality of the compact. The lawsuit argues that jurisdiction over land does not automatically pass to the federal government and Indian tribe upon purchase of title, but that the land remains governed by state law unless and until the state formally cedes jurisdiction, which it has not done. That means casino gambling is illegal on the site. "Washington is ignoring this litigation and thumbing it's nose at the people of Sonoma County and the State of California." "Secretary Laverdure has signed a compact that hasn't yet been shown to be legal under California state law." Area residents are also very concerned about the environmental issues that were ignored by the study done for the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria (FIGR) casino project. 68% of area residents remain opposed to the Graton Rancheria casino. The company that performed the environmental study, Analytical Environmental Services, has come under a cloud of suspicion for multiple violations of the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) for another tribal casino study it did. "This casino is an environmental disaster," said Pastor Worthington. "It will put 40,000 more car trips on Highway 101 every day and will increase crime, pollution and domestic violence in our community." "The NEPA study was joke, its use in the compact was criminal, and the compact itself is criminal. That's why we went to court." STC101 believes the gambling compact to be a state issue that must be decided in our state courts, as is the right of all Californians.. With one lawsuit already in the state courts, now that the compact has been approved by Washington, STC101 might now raise a challenge in federal court. |
| Tribes Spending Millions on Capitol Hill and in Statehouses Across the Nation to Get Their Way From McClatchy Newspapers Read the Article "WASHINGTON - After buying a new chunk of land 50 miles north of San Francisco, the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria just broke ground on a new, Las Vegas-style casino. It will be the largest in the Bay Area, with 3,000 slot machines, 200 hotel rooms, a spa, bars, restaurants and parking for more than 5,000 cars. "In New York, the Shinnecock Indian Nation is considering Long Island as a site on which to build the Big Apple's first tribal casino. "And in Washington state, the Spokane Tribe of Indians wants a new 13-story casino and hotel next to the Fairchild Air Force Base, prompting fears that the city will become "Spo-Vegas." "The plans are extraordinary for one reason: In all three cases, the tribes want to build their palaces on new land that's not part of their original reservations. "The expansions are the latest twist in the nation's Indian casino wars, and they mark a major shift for the tribes, which already run 385 casinos and bingo halls in 29 states." |

An indepth report on, umm, a statue on Temple Street

A thought struck me the other day. My career may have taken me out to the suburbs, but that's no reason that this fine publication or its audience should suffer.
So after quickly - and needlessly, I'm sure - apologizing for my absence these last few months, I'll resume my exercise of lowering journalistic standards more than I already have. How?
Check out the Times' newest feature, a picture of a statue that stands proudly on the northern edge of the courtyard outside Cass Tech High School. Some recent business took me to Temple Street, most recently made famous when that guy who long ago played Lt. Fancy showed up at the Temple Bar in "Detroit 1-8-7." (Damn, I miss that show!)
What do we know about this statue?
I'll do my best to post updates on here more often than every six months. Wanna help? Feel free to shoot me a photo, or post one on our Facebook page. One way or another, it'll get to us. A little bit of info that describes what you're sending wouldn't hurt either.
Although obviously, it's not a requirement.

Comerica Park Scoreboard Looms Large Over Leftfield

In the wake of Octavio Dotel's momentary inability to throw a baseball straight, we figured that maybe what the Tiges need to get rolling out west is a little DT Love. In the coming days, look for anything Tigers related to fill this space, which we hope is at least a slight improvement over our recent habit of posting nothing at all.
Will it work? It's anybody's guess, but I like the odds. It's only a matter of time before the Tigers bats heat up. Hell, Cabrera hit a ball so hard last night he nearly killed a guy, and it resulted in an inning-ending double play. The bounces will start going our way soon and when they do, the DT would love to be there waiting to scoop up some of the credit, even if it's only being dished out internally.
So here we go, aiming to ignite a surge that we haven't ridden since 35-5. We begin out beyond the leftfield fence, to the already-monstrous scoreboard that was enlarged this off-season. There are a number of reasons for the upgrade, including a switch to LED technology and the desire to raise the scoreboard about 16 feet so that none of it was blocked by that corner of upper-deck seating down the leftfield line.
One other rumor says that Tigers brass, upon signing Prince Fielder in the off-season, wanted to make opposing pitchers crap their pants by showing a 5,000-square foot picture of Prince whenever he's on deck. So far it hasn't worked. A quick look at MLB stats tells us that OMBMBOPACP (On-Mound Bowel Movements By Opposing Pitchers At Comerica Park) is still at zero, but give it time.
The Love is just beginning.
